To see these interactive pictures you’ll need Quicktime from Apple which is probably already installed on your computer or DevalVR .
Personally, I strongly recommend DevalVR if you are on a PC (for Mac users – Pangea VR is not yet available, sorry, I intend to do it sometime in the future). It uses 3D acceleration to render the panorama allowing for a very smooth movement; you can use real fullscreen mode; it’s free and it is a tiny download, only 250 kb while Quicktime doesn’t allow for a true fullscreen and it’s nearly 20 mb.
HD (High Definition) panoramas – for these you’ll need Flash Player.
Download
Get DevalVR – Free download (no nags nor spywares)
Get Quicktime – Free download (no nags nor spywares)
Get Adobe Flash Player – Free download (no nags nor spywares)
Installation
Installing DevalVR is easy and quick. Click the button Get DevalVR to access their page, there you click on the big green button to start the installation.
Internet Explorer (IE) as well as Firefox – and probably any other browser – will warn you about the website trying to install some software. IE will open an yellow bar on the top telling you about the evil dangers of installing unknow software… but we know DevalVR right? Hmmm… ok, at least I do, it’s safe. Just click on it and then on « Install ActiveX Control… » to allow it. IE will ask you one more time, asking you if it should be allowed to do so. Click Install and in a few seconds it’s done. Firefox will open a small window asking if it should allow the installation. Just accept and let it continue. On both cases you will see a small panorama at the end, an indication that it is installed and working fine.
Viewing/Interacting
You can change your prefered viewer anytime on the top of the open interactive panorama.
Click on the plain picture to open the fullscreen interactive VR;
Click, hold and drag to « look » around; use ctrl and shift keys to zoom in/out;
Use Shift to zoom in and Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) to zoom out;
You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate but it’s not as intuitive, not as nearly fun, as using the mouse.
As I said before DevalVR allow us to show the panorama in real fullscreen mode which means absolutely no bars, frames or anything else blocking our view. Just right-click on the open panorama and then click on the « Fullscreen » option to have a truly immersive experience! To exit fullscreen mode hit the ESC key or the small « x » button at the top right corner of your screen.
HD (High Definition) panoramas – once you open the HD view, use the buttons on the bottom of the viewer to zoom in/out; move it or to reset the zoom to it’s initial state. You can also use your mouse and keyboard: click on the picture to zoom in; click, hold and drag to move it. Ctrl and Shift (PC) or Cmd and Shift (Mac) to zoom in and out; arrow keys to move it.
Soon
I will set an option to use a Flash player very soon which is cross-platform making it easier for a lot of people, including those on Linux.
Thanks Bert for the Panoblog Plugin.
